The apostle Paul was one of the most zealous evangelists and clearest thinkers in the early church. What we know about him comes from the Acts of the Apostles and from the letters that make up a large part of our New Testament. Our culture is fast becoming as pagan as it was in Paul’s time. With individual Christians and churches exhibiting many of the problems that he addressed, his letters are of crucial importance to the modern church. They enable us to respond to those issues in a godly and courageous way, and remain faithful to Christ and his gospel in our own age.

This unit looks at the important themes of all Paul’s letters, but with a focus on his most 'systematic' letter, Romans. It includes a close study of the English text of chapters 1-11. Join us for this study, and be prepared to be stirred by what Paul wrote in Romans, as well as in his other letters - not always easy, but never dull, and always stirring and thought provoking!

INTENSIVE MODE STUDY PROGRAM

For those in busy full-time employment or at a distance from metropolitan areas, or in rural Australia, SMBC offers a flexible, comprehensive, intensive mode study program. Our Intensives students include: christian workers and teachers, mums and retirees, business people and trades people.

Effectively it is study at home with a week at SMBC for face-to-face teaching. This offers the best of both worlds, with pre-reading and assignments done at home in your own time (with e-library access) and a focused week of teaching and study with your lecturer, plus interaction with fellow students. Exams take place several weeks after the intensive. For those living outside of Sydney, it is possible to do your exams near home with an approved supervisor.

You can complete an Australian College of Theology (ACT) Diploma of Ministry (equivalent to the first year of the Bachelor of Theology) or a Graduate Diploma of Divinity (equivalent to the first year of the Master of Divinity) in four years by intensive mode study. We are just a phone call away if you would like to chat with us about our intensive study options. Please contact us on 02 9747 4780 or email.

What our students like about intensive mode study:

"Being able to attend lectures without being tired after work and being able to saturate yourself with the content to the exclusion of other commitments."

"It's been the perfect way for me to balance work and study and get the most out of the lectures."

"Great to be able to have the lectures condensed into one week as I work and have young children (my husband has taken the week off work). Great to have a small group with informal, non-threatening discussion."

"I found the pre-reading really beneficial because it allowed me to engage with and reflect on the course content before coming to class. Intensive-mode study helps me to think about the content in a deeper way."

"I work in ministry and it's a joy to be able to take a week off and spend time basking in God's word, thinking and learning, and then heading straight back to work and applying it. I find I'm always refreshed and re-energised in my ministry after my week with SMBC!"

"As a full-time worker, it enables me to take a week out to focus on study and finish my degree in a reasonable time-frame. We get the benefit of teaching from SMBC’s quality lecturers without the dilution of online study and to experience a study community face-to-face."
