ENROL BY: Friday 7 September 2018

The church is far from perfect; whether we have in mind the early church or the church today. How did the church get started? What issues did those first Christians struggle with? How did God use his people to spread the light of the gospel from its beginnings in Judea and Jerusalem to the heart of the Roman Empire?

In this unit, we study the Acts of the Apostles, or (to put it differently) the Acts of the risen Lord Jesus. We trace how God was at work through his imperfect but faithful people. We will also look at some of the letters of the New Testament in the setting that Acts provides, and see how they give us a window into the issues faced by the early church – and how the apostles dealt with these issues on the basis of the truth of the gospel of Christ. It provides guidance as the Lord Jesus continues to work through his imperfect people today.

INTENSIVE MODE STUDY PROGRAM

For those in busy full-time employment or at a distance from metropolitan areas, or in rural Australia, SMBC offers a flexible, comprehensive, intensive mode study program. Our Intensives students include: christian workers and teachers, mums and retirees, business people and trades people.

Effectively it is study at home with a week at SMBC for face-to-face teaching. This offers the best of both worlds, with pre-reading and assignments done at home in your own time (with e-library access) and a focused week of teaching and study with your lecturer, plus interaction with fellow students. Exams take place several weeks after the intensive. For those living outside of Sydney, it is possible to do your exams near home with an approved supervisor.

We are just a phone call away if you would like to chat with us about our intensive study options. Please contact us on 02 9747 4780 or email.

What our students like about intensive mode study:

"As a full-time worker, it enables me to take a week out to focus on study and finish my degree in a reasonable time-frame. We get the benefit of teaching from SMBC’s quality lecturers without the dilution of online study and to experience a study community face-to-face."

"I found the pre-reading really beneficial because it allowed me to engage with and reflect on the course content before coming to class. Intensive mode study helps me to think about the content in a deeper way."

"Being able to attend lectures without being tired after work and being able to saturate yourself with the content to the exclusion of other commitments."

"It's been the perfect way for me to balance work and study and get the most out of the lectures."

"Great to be able to have the lectures condensed into one week as I work and have young children (my husband has taken the week off work). Great to have a small group with informal, non-threatening discussion. Hope to do lots of the Biblical Theology subjects this way."

"I've really enjoyed the smaller group (as compared to the weekly, semester long lectures) because it's fostered lots of conversation between everyone. It feels more like a Bible study or tutorial than a lecture, but has been just as informative."

"I like this method of study. It was the ability to complete a whole course eg Graduate Diploma of Divinity, over time in this intensive mode that made me do what I had thought of doing ages ago."

"Staff are supportive and understand the needs of students who require study via intensive mode."

"As a student that lives in Port Macquarie, the intensive mode works great. It allows me to study in community and discuss, instead of doing it all online."

"It's great to think deeply about one subject and a great way to build relationships with other part-time students."
