Under the Sun: Hearing God’s Word from the Book of Ecclesiastes

Life is fleeting so _____________.
How would you finish the sentence?

Life is fleeting so eat ice cream?
Life is fleeting so love your family?
Travel the world?
Play your favourite music loudly?
Retire early?

The writer of Ecclesiastes doesn't shy away from calling this life short, fleeting, transient... like mist. He observes that life under the sun can seem like it goes nowhere but simply circles around and around. Life is littered with both joys and disappointments. It can be puzzling, it can seem unfair.

God speaks in Ecclesiastes to open our hearts and minds to these realities and to show us how to navigate this fleeting life with godly wisdom. It's wisdom that looks to Him who is eternal, unchanging, just and richly generous.

We hope you'll join us to explore the Book of Ecclesiastes – to learn to trust the Lord more deeply and to enjoy his good gifts in this life, while we wait for the next.

Janet Riley
SMBC Dean of Women

The word of God is living and active and powerful. By his word, God stilled the storm, made the universe out of nothing and brings spiritual life to dead people. By his word, God revives the soul, makes wise the simple and gives joy to the heart. Expository preaching of God’s word lies at the heart of the SMBC Women’s Conference. We believe there is nothing better we can give you.

Jenny is SMBC’s Dean of Students and lecturer in Pastoral Care and Preaching. She regularly speaks at women's conferences across the country, as well as overseas. Jenny loves seeing women grow in their understanding of the gospel, and to that end, teaching and preaching to women and equipping others to do the same. She also loves spending time with her family, seeing a good movie, viewing aquatic life with snorkel and goggles and walks around Sydney and beyond... the latter two, preferably before breakfast!

Catherine currently works part-time for Orange Presbyterian Church developing the youth ministry, and part-time as a research assistant at Charles Sturt University.  Prior to this, she served with university ministry in Australia and overseas, and was a geologist before that. She enjoys bush walks, painting and drawing, playing the mandolin and tin whistle, and spontaneous adventures.

Born and bred in Tasmania, Anna now lives with her husband and their three kids in a big, bustling South-East Asian city. She takes pleasure in the chaos, community, monsoon rains, spicy food and tropical fruits, but misses Australian sausages and national parks. Anna spends her time taking care of her family, fermenting foods and drinks, leading Bible discussions and birthing seminars at a local pregnancy crisis centre, and reading real paper books.

Please note:
i) We are not able to offer creche facilities at the conference.
ii) Limited space is available in the auditoriums for nursing mothers.
iii) Cost includes lunch and morning tea (Croydon Campus) or lunch and afternoon tea (Roberts-Dale Campus). Vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free options will be available on the day.
