2017 Women’s Conference
The word of God is living and active and powerful. By his word, God stilled the storm, made the universe out of nothing and brings spiritual life to dead people. By his word, God revives the soul, makes wise the simple and gives joy to the heart. That’s why expository preaching of God’s word lies at the heart of SMBC Women’s Conference. We believe there is nothing better we can give you.
All the Treasures - Bible talks on Colossians
Do you suffer from 'FOMO' - the fear of missing out? That nagging feeling that something more exciting or interesting is currently happening elsewhere and you’re not a part of it?
Do you say ‘yes’ to more than you could possibly do because the thing you say ‘no’ to just might be the event of the year? Do you delay replying to a dinner invitation in case a better offer comes along, an offer you would miss out on if already committed? Do you constantly check social media believing you may be missing out on the latest tweet or YouTube video to go viral, the latest social invitation, the latest critique of that reality TV show?
More significantly, does the fear of missing out impact your relationship with God? Do you say ‘yes’ to so many things that you’ve forgotten what lies at the heart of being a Christian? Do you delay committing to your church family in case a better offer comes along? Do you live in a world of borrowed quotes because you’re too busy keeping up to dwell richly in his word?
We all need to hear what Paul writes to the church in Colossae. They were a church being infiltrated by a message that claimed they were missing out, that there was more to take hold of, more to do, more secret knowledge to unlock, more experiences to be had than they’d been told in the gospel about Jesus. As Paul writes to them, he holds Jesus up in all his beauty and sufficiency and shows the Colossians that in him they already have the very best - all the treasures.
"...Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3)
Jenny is SMBC’s Dean of Students and lecturer in Pastoral Care and Preaching. She regularly speaks at women's conferences across the country, as well as overseas, including The Gospel Coalition conferences. She has contributed to a number of publications, including ‘Here is Our God’ (edited by Kathleen Nielson and D A Carson). Jenny loves seeing women grow in their understanding of the gospel, and to that end, teaching and preaching to women and equipping others to do the same. She also loves spending time with her family, seeing a good movie, viewing aquatic life with snorkel and goggles and walks around Sydney and beyond... the latter two, preferably before breakfast!
Catherine has just returned to Australia from Ireland after serving in student ministry with CMS and IFES Ireland for 5½ years. After uni she worked as a geologist in gold mining before heading to SMBC in 2002. She then served in church and student ministry in Orange and Sydney, before returning to SMBC for further study in 2009. She enjoys reading the Bible with people, playing with her nieces, bush walks, painting and drawing, playing the mandolin and tin whistle, and spontaneous adventures.
