Biblical Hebrew (LA003A)
2019 Semester 1 Tuesday + Thursday Daytime Unit
LA003A is the first step to building a lasting framework for engaging with Biblical Hebrew texts in their original language. By completing both Biblical Hebrew A and B (Semester 2), students will be in position to work directly with the Hebrew scriptures, and to continue translation and exegesis of Old Testament texts. After these units, students will be able to take Old Testament exegesis units in the Hebrew stream.
This semester, after learning how to use the Hebrew script, we will start our journey through the fundamentals of Hebrew grammar and syntax and begin learning basic Hebrew vocabulary. Along the way, we'll consider the context of Biblical Hebrew and its writing system, consider different types of Hebrew literature in the Tanakh, grapple with the art and complexity of modern translation, and introduce various resources that assist us in our endeavour to understand Hebrew.
