Fourth Gospel (English) (NT424/624)
Prerequisite: NT301/501
2019 Semester 1 Monday Daytime Unit
Ever wish you'd been there with Jesus, listening to him in action and even eavesdropping on his conversation with his Father? John was there, and left us his eyewitness record. The Gospel of John is unique: simple and accessible, but also complex and profound. Its purpose, according to John, is ‘that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name’ (John 20:31).
To explore the breadth and richness of John’s portrait of Jesus, we'll work carefully through the English text of John 1-8 and 14-16. We’ll explore its theology, including topics like Christology; the Holy Spirit; eschatology; election; life and judgement; sacraments; faith and signs. We’ll consider John's interplay between narrative, encounter, sign and teaching. We'll discuss this remarkable Gospel's application to life and ministry, as God continues to speak in it to his people today.
