Genesis and Deuteronomy (OT205)

2019 Semester 1 Wednesday Daytime Unit

The texts of the Pentateuch (Genesis to Deuteronomy) have been foundational for biblical faith for over 2,000 years. Yet many Christians struggle to know what to make of these books with their unique blend of law and narrative. Perhaps even more than that, many wonder what relevance, if any, this part of Scripture has for the contemporary church.

This unit explores Genesis 1-11 and select texts from the book of Deuteronomy in order to address the above questions. Students will gain a better appreciation for why these books have held such an important place in the faith of Jews and Christians as well as learning how to read and understand them better. They will also delve into the rich theology found here and explore how these texts continue to function as God's living Word to his people.
