Interpreting Samuel for Today

AQF: 7/8/9, hybrid

INTENSIVE
Lecture Week: Monday 4 – Friday 8 September 2023

OT042-712i/812i/912i + OT205-912i (Capstone) + OT046-712i/812i/912i

1 & 2 Samuel are often seen as the most literarily sophisticated books of the Bible. Gripping stories of Samuel, Saul and David combine to describe the dawn of Israel's monarchy. The central character, however, is God himself. And the obvious focus on history is actually made subordinate to communicating life-changing theology. Ultimately, God's choice of David forms an essential backdrop for understanding Jesus as messiah and king.

This unit will explore how 1 & 2 Samuel are designed to communicate a message for ancient Israel, and in turn, for God's people today. An important goal will be to grow in our ability to interpret Old Testament narrative.  Indeed, the remarkable artistic dimension of these books calls readers to pay special attention to the literary devices they employ. The unit will also consider significant interpreters and methods of interpretation. Along the way, we'll look at issues and themes such as the ark narrative, the theology of kingship, the Davidic Covenant and the interaction of kings and prophets.
