SEMESTER 2 2020
Monday Daytime Unit
One morning, Hezekiah looked over the wall of Jerusalem to see that the Assyrian soldiers who were going to destroy the city had dropped dead. Isaiah is a book full of surprises: nations will turn their weapons into farming tools, a virgin will be with child, one day Egypt will be called God’s people, an exalted conqueror can be despised for looking weak and barely human.
This unit gives us an opportunity to consider the entire sweep of Isaiah 1–66 as a unified, imaginative, persuasive book that is an especially rich source for Old Testament theology. Students will gain skills in biblical exegesis and begin to consider how various methodologies can deepen our engagement with the text. The unit will challenge you to trust God and his grand purposes. You will begin to consider how to echo the literary creativity of the book of Isaiah in your own teaching and preaching.
This unit can be studied with reference to the English (OT022) or the Hebrew (OT023) text.
