2019 Semester 1 Tuesday Daytime Unit
(Hebrew (OT434/634): also Wednesday Daytime)
There's something intriguing and appealing about books like Job, Ecclesiastes and Proverbs. But then they disorient us. The book of Job is sad, Ecclesiastes is sceptical and Proverbs is self-interested. And they don't seem to be about the gospel.
In this unit, we will consider what wisdom is and how it fits in the grand message of the Bible. We will explore what the Wisdom Literature teaches about revelation, knowledge, creation and justice We will pay close attention to passages of Ecclesiastes and, especially, Job. Throughout the unit there will be time to consider the implications of the text for wise living, prayer and pastoral care. You may find that the literature that seemed sad, sceptical and self-interested offers a subversive and liberating joy.
For students with a background in Hebrew, there is potential to explore set chapters of the Hebrew text of Job and Ecclesiastes.
