Biblical Hebrew A
Description
This unit is the first step in building a solid framework for engaging with Biblical Hebrew texts in their original language. By completing both Biblical Hebrew A and B (Semester 2), students will be in a position to work directly with the Hebrew scriptures, and to continue translation and exegesis of Old Testament texts. After these units, students will be able to take Old Testament exegesis units in the Hebrew stream.
This semester, after learning how to use the Hebrew script, we will start our journey through the fundamentals of Hebrew grammar, syntax and vocabulary. Along the way, we’ll discuss the context of Biblical Hebrew and its writing system, consider different types of Hebrew literature in the Tanakh, grapple with the art and complexity of modern translation, and introduce various resources that assist us in our exploration of Hebrew texts.
